 Social Studies Program

6th Grade

The primary content for this course pertains to the world's earliest people to the ancient and classical civilizations of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Students will be exposed to the multiple dynamics of world history including economics, geography, politics, and religion/philosophy. Students will study methods of historical inquiry and primary and secondary historical documents. We will discover the artifacts each place left behind for us to discover, use, and improve in today's world.

7th Grade

Civics is the social studies course for 7th grade students. All Florida students are required to take Civics and will take an End-Of-Course Assessment (EOC) in May 2025. Civics is essentially the study of the founding of the United States of America, the government that was established, how the government functions, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. This class will require students to connect what we have learned to current events so we encourage families to discuss current affairs at home!

8th Grade

The Eighth Grade United States History classes cover the time period of 1607 to 1880, starting with European Settlements of North America and concluding with Reconstruction of the U. S. after the Civil War.  Throughout the course civics is integrated into the curriculum.

To further advance students at Carver Middle School, we have instituted and broadened the spectrum of our Social Studies department by incorporating learning strategies that promote student-learning.  These strategies are:

  • Guided Reading

  • Shared Reading

  • Successmaker

  • Further Technology

  • Rotating Stations

And since this is a historic voting year, Carver Middle School will have a mock election teaching students the overall voting process.

  • Lessons will take place in the classroom (including how to make informed decisions)

  • An election precinct will be created

  • Voter registration cards will be issued

  • Voting booths will be created

  • Students will be issued voting ballots from "KidsVoting"

  • Students will cast their ballots

By allowing students to participate and understand the importance of voting, it also demonstrates the significance of their civic duty and responsibility as American citizens.
